Tools Every Hairstylist Needs

As you get started in the hairstylist business, you will realize that you need a lot of different items to do your job as well as possible. You can’t simply show up with a pair of shears and create beautiful haircuts or styles.

Whether you are just getting started in cosmetology school or you are starting your career in a salon, there are certain tools that every hairdresser needs. You may be able to borrow them from other hairdressers, but having your own hair styling tools can make your job easier and allow you to do more for your clients.

Shears

While this may seem like a no-brainer, having shears is important for hairdressers. Many hairstylists have multiple shears that can accomplish different cuts and styles. Investing in a high-quality pair of shears is important and can help you provide better cuts.

Duckbill Clips

Clips are great for sectioning hair during cutting, styling, and coloring. Using clips during a haircut can make it easier to add layers or perfect one section at a time. Duckbill clips are generally lightweight but can handle holding thick or thin hair securely in place. Find clips that are easy to open and hold in the hair nicely.

Variety of Brushes and Combs

While a round brush may by you go-to brush choice, you should add a variety of brushes to your collection. Round brushes are great for blowouts and giving your client’s hair volume, but you will want other brushes as well. A smoothing brush can also be beneficial. This can be used to brush out curls, giving them a uniformed curl pattern. This brush type can also be used to back-brush, which adds more texture and volume. A wide tooth comb is a great tool when you need to detangle a client’s hair. You will also want to add a regular comb, which can help you section and part the hair in straight lines.

High-Quality Electric Tools

Investing in a high-quality blow dryer that is lightweight and powerful will come in handy time and time again. Don’t settle for an old and outdated blow dryer. You will also want to add a curling iron, flat iron, and an electric razor to your hairstyling station. These will help make styling easier and keep your clients satisfied.

This is only a few of the many hairstyling tools you will need to start your hairdressing career with. As you go through our program and learn different techniques, you will figure out which tools work for you and which you do not need.
